Saily review: is Saily good?

Yes, Saily is a good eSIM, with the easiest app for a first one. 10 GB for 30 days in Japan costs about $17.99. One user saw it show up in Hong Kong there, which blocked ChatGPT.

If you buy through a button here, the provider pays me a commission. Your price stays the same.

Saily in Japan: the Hong Kong report

A travel eSIM rides on a local network, but your traffic can reach the internet from another country. One user (August 2025) reported that Saily's Japan eSIM shows a Hong Kong IP address. Here is what that changes, next to Ubigi, my pick for Japan.

Where your connection comes out in Japan

The country websites and apps think you are in.

  4. What changesNothingApps behave as they do for anyone in Japan

It is one report, so it may not happen to you. Saily's virtual location may let you appear from another country, but that isn't confirmed yet. Maps, messages and WhatsApp don't depend on the country you appear from, so most trips won't notice. If you plan to lean on ChatGPT for menus and train questions, Ubigi is the safer buy for Japan.

Ubigi, 10 GB, 30 days at $16.50. Users report a Japanese IP address with it, so apps see you in Japan.

The Saily eSIM app

This is where Saily earns its place. You buy and install from the same app, one screen at a time, with no QR code to scan from a second screen.

  1. 1At home, a few days before

    Find your destination

Type the country in the app. Regional plans such as Europe sit in the same list.

  2. 2Still at home

    Pick a plan and pay

Plans are listed by size, with the price next to each.

  3. 3The day before you fly

    Tap Install

Your phone adds the eSIM as a second line. When you land, set it as your data line in Settings > Cellular and turn its Data Roaming on.

Does Saily have a VPN?

Not a full one. Saily is made by Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN, and its app adds free security extras to the data you buy.

Ad blocker

Filters ads before they load on your phone.

Web protection

Blocks phishing sites and trackers.

Virtual location

Routes your traffic through a NordVPN server, so your connection can appear from another country.

Not a full VPN

Saily doesn't encrypt your data on the phone, so keep the VPN your employer asks you to use.

Saily eSIM for Europe

Saily's Europe plan lists 34 to 35 countries. Turkey is not included, and the UK is worth checking in the app before you buy. 10 GB for 30 days costs about $35.99, against about $31.00 for Airalo Eurolink, which covers 41 countries, the UK, Switzerland and Turkey included.

On "unlimited" the gap closes. Seven days cost about $28.99 at Saily, $27.00 at Airalo and $27.50 at Holafly, and Saily and Airalo both stay at full speed for 5 GB a day. If you're staying in one or two countries and already like the Saily app, it is a fair buy. For a trip across several countries, Airalo Eurolink is my pick.

All the Europe plans side by side, with the countries each one covers: best eSIM for Europe.

Are there any downsides to Saily?

Four, and only the first one changes the pick for some travelers.

A Hong Kong IP in Japan

One user reported it in August 2025, and it blocked ChatGPT.

Data only

No phone number comes with the plan. You call over WhatsApp or FaceTime, and your US line still takes normal calls and texts.

Pricier in Europe

$4.99 more than Airalo Eurolink for 10 GB over 30 days, with fewer countries covered.

"Unlimited" has a daily limit

Full speed stops after 5 GB a day. That is still more than Airalo (3 GB) or Nomad (2 GB) in Japan.

Saily vs Airalo

Airalo is the one most people compare Saily with. It is a little cheaper and covers more countries, and Saily has the easier app and more full-speed data on unlimited.
